Holt High School
Family & Consumer Sciences Department
Welcome to Family and Consumer Sciences!
Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) courses empower our students with the knowledge and skills to achieve success throughout their lifespan. We believe that our society is stronger when individuals are career and college ready, find fulfillment in their personal lives, are able to support themselves, and are confident, responsible community members in stable, loving families and relationships.
The courses offered in our department build students' problem solving, communication, teamwork, leadership, and technology skills which enable them to become strong critical thinkers. By examining careers, investigating required training and education, and developing 21st century skills for employment, students will be ready to meet personal, family, career, and community challenges they will face in their adult life. Formerly known as Home Economics, the field has broadened and represents many areas for both young men and women to explore including hospitality and culinary arts, teaching, child development, personal finances and family resource management, apparel and textiles, housing and interior design, career exploration and entrepreneurship, and life literacy also known as "adulting". Through engaging classroom activities and hands-on experiences, all of our FACS students are prepared to face the complex social, emotional and economic issues that individuals, families, and communities face today. Students might go on to pursue careers such as:
Elementary or Secondary Teacher, Dietician, Social Worker, Chef, Interior Designer, Personal Financial Advisor, Child Care Worker, Fashion Designer, Baker, Counselor, Travel Specialist, Textile Designer, Food Scientist, Child Advocate, Caterer, Parent Educator, Retail Management, Gerontology Specialist, Costume Designer, Nursing/Retirement Facility worker, Event Planner, Nutrition Consultant, Early Childhood Development Intervention, Food and Beverage Manager, Culinologist, Architect, Fashion Merchandiser, Seamstress, Consumer Affairs, Human Resource Manager, Hotel and Restaurant Management and many others.......
